DECREASE IN FIRE DANGER LEVEL
DFPA NEWS RELEASE: With predicted decreases in temperatures, increases in relative humidity, and greater overnight moisture recovery, we will lower the fire danger level from EXTREME to HIGH on lands protected by the Douglas Forest Protective Association (DFPA).
Effective Friday, August 15, 2025, at 12:01 am, Public Use Restrictions (PURs) will be decreased to HIGH for all private, county, state, and Bureau of Indian Affairs lands within the Douglas District. These restrictions are in place to help prevent wildfires.
What does this change mean for the public?
Non-industrial use of power saws, metal cutting, grinding, or welding, and cutting, trimming, or mowing dried, cured grass, as well as the use of power-driven machinery for non-industrial improvement or development on private property, will only be permitted BEFORE 10 AM or AFTER 8 PM.
Please remember that we are still in fire season, and fire danger remains. The expected rain throughout the weekend will not reduce the fire risk or end fire season.
- Backyard debris burning, including the use of burn barrels, is prohibited.
- Open fires, including campfires, cooking, and warming fires, are not permitted except at designated sites.
- Smoking is prohibited while traveling, except in vehicles on improved roads, boats on the water, and other designated locations.
- The use of fireworks, exploding targets, and tracer ammunition is prohibited. In addition, the use of sky lanterns is prohibited year-round in Oregon.
- Charcoal and pellet BBQs are only allowed at fully developed and maintained residential home sites when used in areas that are free of flammable vegetation. A charged garden hose or a 2 ½ pound or larger fire extinguisher must be immediately available. Portable cooking stoves using liquefied or bottled fuels are allowed elsewhere.
- Motor vehicles, including motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles, are only allowed on improved roads that are free of flammable vegetation. This restriction is waived on private lands during periods of low fire danger or when vehicles are used for the cultivation and harvesting of agricultural crops. In addition, each vehicle with three or more wheels traveling on forest roads must have an axe, a shovel, and either one gallon of water or one operational 2½-pound or larger fire extinguisher. Motorcycles must be equipped with either one gallon of water or one operational 2 ½-pound or larger fire extinguisher.
- Any electric fence controller in use shall be listed by a nationally recognized testing laboratory or be certified by the Department of Consumer and Business Services and be operated in compliance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
The Industrial Fire Precaution Levels (IFPLs) will remain at LEVEL 3, district-wide.
